What is Arduino?
Arduino is an open-source electronics platform upon which the KosmoDuino--the microcontroller included in this kit--was based. For a long time, microcontroller programming was only for specialists. In 2005, the founders of the Arduino project took it upon themselves to make the programming and use of simple microcontrollers as easy as possible. That way, art students and hobbyists who had never before had any experience with programming would be able to use microcontrollers in their work.

The Microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small ('micro') computer. It is also fundamentally different from a computer that you normally use: It has no keyboard, no mouse, and no screen. Instead, it has lots of little feet, known as pins. A pin is something like a connection between the microcontroller and the outside world. The KosmoDuino is the microcontroller used in this kit and it's completely Arduino-compatible, meaning that you can program it using the language of this open-source electronic platform.
The App
To ease your entry into the world of programming, CodeGamer comes with an app to help you start building experience in this area. The core of the app is the video game in which you have to solve little programming puzzles to advance from level to level. As you collect lines of code (called code monsters) to solve the puzzles, you are learning the basics of coding! Within the app are detailed explanations of what each code monster represents, how to use the four sensorbots, and how the gamepad controller works. There’s also a Level Editor option: you can set your own levels and unlock them for other CodeGamer players to experience.
The Projects
The manual takes you through 19 different programming projects and experiments. First, you install the Arduino software onto your laptop or PC. Next, you write programs in the Arduino software and connect your KosmoDuino to your computer to upload the programs to it. The projects in the manual guide you to make a light-sensitive drawer alarm, an LED disco light that reacts to the movements of your fingers, and much more!
Gaming
Connect the physical and digital worlds! Use the gamepad to play through 15 fun game levels on your tablet. Plug one of the four sensorbots into the gamepad to activate its special powers and clear obstacles you’ll encounter throughout the game. As you play, you’ll collect code monsters that you’ll need at the computer terminals that appear throughout each level: The computer terminals contain incomplete code, so you’ll need to drag the code monsters into the correct spots in the program to move forward.
Coding
Level by level, learn the basics of the Arduino programming language! As you collect the code monsters in the game, you’ll learn about what these lines of code mean and how to use them to create a program. Once you’ve successfully created a program within the video game, the app will suggest different projects you can do outside of the game using the code you just discovered!
Making
Become a programmer and apply your knowledge to cool projects! In today’s world, coding is becoming a useful, if not necessary, skill to master. Using the KosmoDuino microprocessor and the basics of coding you’ve learned by playing the video game and experimenting with the projects in the manual, you can enter the digital maker’s world and unleash your creativity. Program the light sensor to count how many times someone opens your drawer, or turn your KosmoDuino into a musical instrument! Since the microcontroller works off of an open-source electronic platform, you can apply what you learn to a multitude of other projects, beyond the video game or kit itself.
